The increased depth of the belt gives much more surface area of the belt (the sidewalls) in contact with the pulley, thus increasing the coefficient of friction, allowing wedge belts to transmit more power than Classical equivalents. Although a little more expensive than Classical belts, they are gradually becoming the industry standard for high-performance drives, and still represent great value for money.
